Parents Writing Contest

Dear Parents, We know that your decision to place your child at your school of choice is based on your dreams for their bright future. It is not an easy decision. We think that you have a story to share with other parents about why you chose the charter school your child attends. By sharing your story, you will help others to achieve their dreams for their kids. To gather these stories, we have organized an Annual Parent Essay Contest. A team of judges will select 5 winning essays with a monetary prize of $250 for each one. If you decide to donate your reward to your child's school for a purpose that you specify, Accord Institute for Education Research will match the prize. The total monetary reward will amount to $500. The winners will be announced on February 1st, 2012. Thanks you for your participation and inspiring other parents. Accord Institute for Education Research Team.

MSA Annual Chess Tournament

Magnolia Annual Chess Tournament was held at MSA San Diego on Saturday, November 12,2011. Nazar K ,tenth grader, did not break the tradition this year too.He won the first place, 3 years in a row, among 30 students. On top of that, Magnolia Wolves took the second place in team category. All Magnolias sent their best chess players to the tournament. The tournament adopted "Swiss-System" . This means that players are paired against others with similar scores. The pairing system is quite complicated and leaves the director almost no room for discretion. Each contestant played 8 games which allowed to rank the students from highest to lowest scores.

Grades 9 and 10 took PSAT on Wednesday, October 10, 2011. They had been given a practice test with the official guide of the test last week. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). • See how the performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
  • Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
  • Help prepare for the SAT. Pupils can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions will be seen on the SAT.

Anatolian Festival

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff and parents as chaperons, MSA-5 students attended the 3rd Anatolian Cultures and Food Festival at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa on October 7th. At the festival, students were able to study exhibits on the ancient Mediterranean civilizations (e.g. the Roman civilization, Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, among others). Furthermore, students were immersed in the beauty of Anatolian/Turkish culture. They were able to taste Turkish food and see traditional Turkish clothing. It was a day filled with fun and learning.
